It means marketing is no longer a one-off effort or a task spread across several people. There is an intention to build structure, to grow with more consistency.

But it is also where the problems begin.

Because, in most cases, the decision comes before the clarity.

You hire a “Head of Marketing” without knowing exactly what that person should do, what they should deliver, or how they will be measured. And a few months later, frustration sets in:

“I expected more strategic vision.”

“They are not bringing results.”

“Everything is still too operational.”

“They still depend too much on me.”

And the conclusion is quick, and often wrong: “we did not find the right person.”

In reality, the problem starts before the hire.

It starts with the definition of the role.

A Head of Marketing is not a more expensive version of a marketer. It is not someone who “does a bit of everything, but better.” And it is definitely not someone who fixes structural problems alone.

A Head of Marketing is, above all, a decision-making role.

And this is where many companies fail: they expect execution when what they need is direction.

First, it is important to understand what this role is not.

It is not the campaign manager.
It is not the person responsible for publishing content.
It is not the one who “pushes the buttons” on the platforms.

If that is what the company needs right now, then it does not need a Head of Marketing. It needs execution.

And hiring a senior profile to do operational work is one of the fastest ways to create misalignment and waste talent.

On the other hand, it is also not someone who walks in and “fixes marketing” in isolation. Marketing does not exist in a vacuum. It depends on the clarity of the offer, on alignment with sales, on the operation’s ability to deliver. If those pillars are not defined, no Head of Marketing will be able to compensate.

So what is a Head of Marketing, in practice?

It is someone who creates structure where there was previously effort.

Someone who turns scattered activities into a coherent system. Who defines priorities, makes choices, and creates alignment between marketing, sales, and the business.

That starts with something simple but often missing: strategic clarity.

A good Head of Marketing can answer, objectively, questions like:

Who is our priority client right now?

What is the value proposition that actually differentiates us?

Which channels make sense to invest in, and which do not?

What are we trying to optimise: fast growth, margin, retention?

Without this clarity, everything else is execution without direction.

Then comes the ability to turn that strategy into a plan.

Not a theoretical document, but an actionable plan with clear priorities, defined resources, and metrics that connect directly to the business. This is where many companies remain stuck: they have activity, but they do not have a plan.

And perhaps most importantly, a Head of Marketing builds a system that does not depend on them for everything.

They define processes, organise the team, establish routines. They ensure consistency in execution even when they are not involved in every detail.

This is particularly relevant in companies where the founder is still very close to marketing. One of the signs that the role is well defined is simple: the founder’s dependence decreases.

But there is a critical point that is rarely discussed.

A Head of Marketing does not create results alone.

If the company does not have a clear offer, if the product does not address a real pain, if the sales team cannot convert, or if the operation does not deliver with quality, marketing will not compensate it. It only amplifies.

This means that what often looks like a marketing problem is not one.

And placing that responsibility on a Head of Marketing is, in practice, asking them to solve problems outside their control.

Another common mistake is the absence of evaluation criteria.

What does “good performance” look like for this role?

More leads?
More traffic?
More sales?

Without a direct link to business metrics, the evaluation becomes subjective, and the relationship deteriorates quickly.

A Head of Marketing should be measured based on real impact: sustainable growth, acquisition efficiency, pipeline quality, alignment with sales.

Everything else is an intermediate indicator.

At its core, the question is not “do we need a Head of Marketing.”

It is: are we ready to have one?

Because hiring this profile before you have:

clarity of objectives

internal alignment

a minimum operational structure

is almost a guarantee of frustration on both sides.

In many cases, what companies need is not a full-time Head of Marketing, but help building the system first. Defining strategy, aligning teams, creating processes, and only then scaling with the right person.

This is exactly where we usually come in at Grow Beyond.

Before talking about hiring, we work on the foundation: what needs to exist, how it should function, and what the real priorities of the business are. Only then does it make sense to put someone in charge.

Because a well-defined Head of Marketing accelerates growth.

But a poorly defined role only makes the problems more expensive and harder to identify.

There is a moment in many growing companies when this decision surfaces: “We need a Head of Marketing.” It is a positive sign.
